How does your recipe fit within the Australian guide to healthy eating? The recipe is composed of foods from 3 of the 5 food groups (Cabbage/Carrot/Celery/Onion = Vegetable group, Sandwich rolls = Grain foods, Beef steak = Meats). This meal is quite healthy as it is practically a salad and steak sandwich with sauce. This makes the steak sandwiches we made a very nutritious and beneficial meal.
How did you delegate the tasks during the cook with your partner?
One of the group members did focused more on chopping and preparing the vegetables, which included cooking the potato wedges, and making the coleslaw. The other group member focused more on the fry pan, which included cooking the steak and sauteing the onion. Similar to the previous weeks, we both shared the role of preparing and cleaning our work station.
What aspects of this cook did you find difficult and how did you overcome these?
This week our meal went great, there was just one aspect we struggled in, the potato wedges. This week our time management wasn't as good, and we lost track of the time we had had the potatoes in the oven for, so we were unsure when it was the best time to take them out. Towards the end of the lesson when pack up time was approaching we had no choice but to remove the tray of potatoes from the oven. It wasn't a surprise to us that the potatoes hadn't cooked that well. We didn't necessarily overcome this difficulty but in the future we will be more cautious of timing our meals.
What aspects of this cook did you enjoy and why? Elaborate on your 5 star rating
This week the meal was great! The steak sandwiches were perfect, as we had a great ratio of salad to meat, and the sauce really balanced out the flavors. The only reason the meal received a 4.7/5 and not a 5/5 was because the potato wedges let us down, as they weren't cooked properly and I think that our wedges were too thick. An aspect of this cook I enjoyed was that our group decided to create our own sauce (a mixture of tomato and mustard sauce, and some spices), and it turned out great. So the aspect of slightly altering the meal with a beneficial outcome, was a good experience.
What new skills did you learn this week?
This week I didn't learn a new skill, I just learned the importance of good time management, and how getting distracted from your meal can be consequential. I learnt this from the fact that our group failed to cook the potatoes properly (more information above).
A brief history of this dish, 50 -100 words (where did it originate from etc)
Since the steak sandwich we made isn't exactly an original recipe, but more of an alteration of your typical sandwich or roll, there isn't much history behind the steak sandwich. Because of this I decided to choose to explain the history behind the Cheese-steak, a recipe very similar to the steak sandwich. The Cheese-steak, or also known as the Philadelphia cheese-steak or Philly cheese steak, is a roll/sandwich made with pieces of steak and melted cheese on a bread roll. Although the origins of the Cheese-steak are unclear, brothers Harry and Pat Olivieri are often believed to be responsible for discovering the dish in 1930s Philadelphia.
